The "beast" is using the latest in digital and social-media techniques to reach, send issue messages to, and solicit money and volunteer time from the tens of millions of voters the campaign has made contact with over the years. Although the "beast" has lots of tasks, its overriding strategic goal is to ruin Mitt Romney's efforts to be seen as an acceptable alternative for the next steward of the American economy.

But the core of Obama's strategy is to focus intently on Mitt the man, in the belief that a presidential election is an affirmative choice, between ideas and polices to be sure, but even more between competing personalities. You can't get elected, Obama strategists say, by the process of elimination.

For example, on a molecule-for-molecule basis the direct radiative effects of methane is about 72 times stronger than carbon dioxide over a 20 year time frame but it is present in much smaller concentrations so that its total direct radiative effect is smaller, and it has a shorter atmospheric lifetime. On the other hand, in addition to its direct radiative impact methane has a large indirect radiative effect because it contributes to ozone formation. Shindell et al. (2005) argue that the contribution to climate change from methane is at least double previous estimates as a result of this effect.¡Êwikipedia¡Ë

On May 9, the government of Alberta released a study into the extra carbon emitted by crude produced using oil sands instead of more conventional sources. The study, by a unit of California-based Jacobs Engineering Group, found that emissions from oil-sand crude are just 12 percent higher than from regular crude.

But the report was not just about the science. It also sent a political signal to Europe: Canada's fight over oil sands is not done yet.

As part its ambitious efforts to cut carbon emissions, the European Union has proposed classifying crude produced from oil sands, or tar sands as environmentalists and others call them, as much dirtier than other fuels.
A 2011 study for the EU by Stanford University academic Adam Brandt found that oil-sand crude was as much as 22 percent more carbon intensive.
Canada, whose oil sands have helped it become an energy power, fears such a ruling could imperil a resource it estimates will add more than C$3 trillion to its economy over the next 25 years.

Shale gas is natural gas formed from being trapped within shale formations. Shale gas has become an increasingly important source of natural gas in the United States over the past decade, and interest has spread to potential gas shales in the rest of the world. One analyst expects shale gas to supply as much as half the natural gas production in North America by 2020.
Some analysts expect that shale gas will greatly expand worldwide energy supply. A study by the Baker Institute of Public Policy at Rice University concluded that increased shale gas production in the US and Canada could help prevent Russia and Persian Gulf countries from dictating higher prices for the gas it exports to European countries. The Obama administration believes that increased shale gas development will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Some studies have alleged that the extraction and use of shale gas may result in the release of more greenhouse gases than conventional natural gas, although other studies have criticized one of these for relying on implausibly high leakage rates and misstating the global warming potential of methane. Other recent studies point to high decline rates of some shale gas wells as an indication that shale gas production may ultimately be much lower than is currently projected.

Hydraulic fracturing is the propagation of fractures in a rock layer caused by the presence of a pressurized fluid. Some hydraulic fractures form naturally, as in the case of veins or dikes, and are a means by which gas and petroleum from source rocks may migrate to reservoir rocks. Induced hydraulic fracturing or hydrofracking, commonly known as fracking, is a technique used to release petroleum, natural gas (including shale gas, tight gas and coal seam gas), or other substances for extraction. This type of fracturing creates fractures from a wellbore drilled into reservoir rock formations.

EPA developed the draft guidance to clarify how companies can comply with a law passed by Congress in 2005, which exempted hydraulic fracturing operations from the requirement to obtain a UIC permit, except in cases where diesel fuel is used as a fracturing fluid.

The Obama administration unveiled long-awaited rules on Friday to bolster oversight on public lands of oil and natural gas drilling using fracking technology that has ushered in a boom in drilling but also triggered environmental protests.
Interior's proposal would update its decades-old fracking regulations with new reporting standards and a requirement that companies get approval before using the drilling technique. The proposal also would require companies to reveal chemicals they use in hydraulic fracturing after they complete the process.
In the past, drilling companies had resisted calls to fully disclose the chemicals they use in fracking, which they regarded as proprietary information. The industry also believes it should be regulated by states instead of the federal government.
But critics, who say fracking has polluted drinking water, want the federal government to tighten regulations, and say drillers should reveal their chemicals before they inject them underground along with water and sand in the fracking process.

True, protecting oil supplies from the Persian Gulf, which holds the world¡Çs largest reserves of conventional oil, is going to remain important. But as we reassess what we can afford to do militarily in the world, countries that depend more directly on Persian Gulf oil should pay a larger share of the burden for keeping the region stable.

The United States may rely less on Persian Gulf crude, but it constitutes 77 percent of Japan¡Çs imports, 74 percent of South Korea¡Çs and 43 percent of China¡Çs imports. For these countries, the physical availability of oil, not just its price, would be a critical issue in a confrontation with Iran. In contrast, we would pay more for oil, but the oil wealth of our neighbors and our growing domestic supply means we¡Çd still be able to get it.

According to the Energy Information Administration, in 2010 some 49 percent of American crude oil and petroleum product imports came from the Western Hemisphere ¡½ about 25 percent of that from Canada alone, making it our single largest supplier. In contrast, the Persian Gulf states provided only 18 percent of our oil imports in 2010, down from 27 percent as recently as 1993.

From one direction, he says, we¡Çre seeing the impact of the ethanol mandate put in place by President George W. Bush, which established fixed quantities of biofuels to be used in gasoline. When this is combined with improved vehicle fuel economy ¡½ in July, the auto industry agreed to achieve fleet averages of more than 50 miles per gallon by 2025 ¡½ it will inevitably drive down demand for gasoline and create more surplus crude to export. Add to that, says Verleger, ¡Èthe increase in oil production from offshore fields and unconventional sources in America,¡É and that exportable U.S. surplus could grow even bigger.

Then, add the recent discoveries of natural gas deposits all over America, which will allow us to substitute gas for coal at power plants and become a natural gas exporter as well. Put it all together, says Verleger, and you can see why America ¡Èwill want to consider joining with other energy-exporting countries, like those in OPEC, to sustain high oil prices. Such an effort would support domestic oil and gas production and give the U.S. a real competitive advantage over countries forced to pay high prices for imported energy ¡½ nations such as China, European Union members, and Japan.¡É

I like when Mann (and related parties speak), every-time they do they seem to shrink and grow weaker, as they feign science, if only we could get patchy, Hansen or Gore to introduce him (shrink/shrink/weak, etc...) then we ask them ...

1.) Dr. Mann - why did you consider a 1 tree sample, which its creator, your fellow Dr. Briffa, advised you against using, as a valid statistical sample, even though there were much better nearby samples which would have been valid statistically but did not agree with your construct known as Mann's Hockey Stick?

We were aware of that and so we didn¡Çt want to go down that slippery slope of saying yes, we¡Çll turn that over and then pretty soon you¡Çre turning over personal emails, you¡Çre turning over your private diaries. We didn¡Çt want to set a precedent that would allow those looking to smear scientists, to go down this endless road of subjecting scientists to vexatious demands that would basically tie us up ¡½ we wouldn¡Çt have any time to even do research any more. Unfortunately that¡Çs what we¡Çve seen ever since. We¡Çve seen politicians try to subject us to subpoena all of our private emails. Its part of this cynical effort to discredit scientists, confuse the public, to intimidate scientists.

¡ÄBut in the end, we even put our computer program out there in the public domain, recognizing that maybe it was going down a slippery slope, because what were they going to demand next? "The House of the Rising Sun" is a traditional folk song from the United States. Also called "House of the Rising Sun" or occasionally "Rising Sun Blues", it tells of a life gone wrong in New Orleans. The most successful commercial version was recorded by the English rock group The Animals in 1964, which was a number one hit in the United Kingdom, United States, Sweden, Finland and Canada. The song is in chromatic-minor.

The phrase "House of the Rising Sun" is often understood as a euphemism for a brothel.
Brothels are business establishments where patrons may engage in sexual activities with prostitutes. Brothels are known under a variety of names, including bordello, cathouse, knocking shop, whorehouse, strumpet house, sporting house, house of ill repute, house of prostitution and bawdy house. In places where prostitution or the operation of brothels is illegal, establishments such as massage parlors, bars or strip clubs may offer sexual services to patrons.
The size and style of brothels vary considerably, as do the range of sexual services available.

On Surprise Visit to Kabul, Obama to Sign Partnership Agreement With Karzai

President Obama landed in Kabul, Afghanistan, on a surprise visit, to sign a strategic partnership agreement with Afghanistan meant to mark the beginning of the end of a war that has lasted for more than a decade.

Mr. Obama, arriving after nightfall on Tuesday under a veil of secrecy at Bagram Air Base north of Kabul, flew by helicopter to the presidential palace, where he was to meet President Hamid Karzai before both leaders signed the pact. It is intended to be a road map for two nations lashed together by more of than a decade of war and groping for a new relationship after the departure of American troops, scheduled for the end of 2014.

Mr. Obama was scheduled to address the American people from Afghanistan on Tuesday evening, which would be the middle of the night in Afghanistan. The address – on the one-year anniversary of the American raid that killed Osama bin Laden in neighboring Pakistan – will give Mr. Obama a new opportunity to make an election-year case that he has wound down two inexpensive and now unpopular wars, in Afghanistan and in Iraq.

As a lifelong republican and a huge Reagan fan, Obama is the best President in my 60 year lifetime. If only people would set aside their loyalties to ideology and see the man for who he is and what he has accomplished. My party is in shambles.

Dear Andrew,
I think you have now become a journalism school case study in the perils of a reporter stepping over into the role of advocate. No one would accuse you of dishonesty or of any kind of ethical lapse. You are not another Jason Blair. However, a reporter must be constantly vigilant with respect to his sources. He/she must assume that there will be subtle (or not subtle) attempts to move you into the fold. It is easy to fall into the trap of becoming a part of the "team", however vicariously, especially when you are granted "access". All of this is magnified when the story line involves a subject like clean air and clean water, protecting a "defiled Mother Nature", and saving the Earth from "imminent and irreversible" global warming caused by avaricious 'Corporate Interests'. It's way too late to return to the role of disinterested journalist. Perhaps, you could best serve your profession by going into journalism school teaching where you could submit yourself as an object lesson to future journalists, ie. the equivalent of "donating your body to science".

If you disagree with the views of a prominent climate scientist, one approach might be to attend his forthcoming lecture at his home campus, Pennsylvania State University, and engage in civil debate when he¡Çs done.
Another would be to mount a faceless Facebook campaign beginning with this catchy phrase:

Interesting analysis but there is one missing point that is particularly critical for any advanced country facing economic stagnation including Japan.
The conventional monetary policy to manipulate interest rates alone will not work any longer in advanced countries.

One of the definitions of advanced countries is that goods and services are already affluent, economic maturity in another word where the technology of innovative products is marginal and the only concern of corporate management and shareholders is cost reduction.
This is the primary cause to have collapsed middle and working class.
Traditional monetary policy and trickle down have only functioned before economy had reached its maturity.

There is no solution but to place economic policy priority on environmental issues that include energy shift from fossil to renewable, smart grid, clean water system from supply to drainage and according infrastructure renovation.
This is the destruction of old economic mold to maximize the potential of technological know-how for more healthy innovation.
